English Language Proficiency Requirements |

High School Upgrading students must demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency to register in academic and English as an Additional Language (EAL) courses.
Academic Course Placement
Students may meet requirements through either the Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Assessment (CLBPA) or Alberta K–12 English as an Additional Language Proficiency Benchmarks (LP):
10-Level (Grade 10) Courses
- CLBPA: Minimum 5 in each strand, or
- Language Proficiency: LP3 or higher
20-Level (Grade 11) Courses
- CLBPA: Minimum 6 in each strand, or
- Language Proficiency: LP4 or higher
30-Level (Grade 12) Courses
- CLBPA: Minimum 7 in each strand, or
- Language Proficiency: LP5
Standardized English Language Tests
Students may also provide one of the following:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
- Minimum 5.0 in each IELTS category
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
English as an Additional Language (EAL) Course Placement
EAL Level 2
- CLBPA: Minimum 3 in each strand
EAL Level 3
- CLBPA: Minimum 4 in each strand
EAL Level 4
- CLBPA: Minimum 5 in each strand
An Assessment May Be Required at Registration
