Alberta High School Diploma Requirements

How to Achieve a High School Diploma in Alberta

  • Graduation Requirements, Credentials and Credits (external link to Alberta Education) - Learn what the minimum requirements are for a student to attain an Alberta High School Diploma.
  • High School Equivalency Diploma: Alternative 1 – Accumulated Credits - If you are a person who is 19 years or older as of September 1st of the current school year and have been out of school for at least 10 consecutive months, you can earn life experience credits towards this diploma.
  • High School Equivalency Diploma: Alternative 2 - General Education Development (GED) Tests (external link to Alberta Education) - A GED provides mature Albertans with the opportunity to earn high school equivalency standing which may assist them in qualifying for better jobs or for work promotions. In Calgary, GED tests can be administered by the Calgary Learning Institute, telephone 403-285-3555. Please note: GED Tests will not be offered in Canada after May 3, 2024. Candidates must register to write the GED by January 31, 2024. They must also schedule their test dates by March 31, 2024.

Important - Mature Student Status

If you were 19 years of age as of September 1st of the current school year, or a holder of a previously awarded Alberta High School Diploma, you may be eligible for Mature Student Status and receive special provisions.
