Fee: $659Braille is a tactile system that enables the blind to read and write. Learn and practice the Unified English Braille (UEB) code, an international braille code that governs the transcription of literary material, math, science, and technology. Access the course from your home computer through CBE's Brightspace by D2L. Classes are delivered online through Microsoft Teams. The Software used for the lesson exercises are Perky Duck, a free software program from Duxbury for Windows or Mac, and Microsoft Word. Mac users will need to be able to use Microsoft Word. Headphones with a microphone and access to a printer are also required. The CNIB's manual, "From Print to Braille with UEB", and sections from "The Rules of English Braille" are provided. PLEASE NOTE: This course is labour-intensive. Each lesson requires 10-15 hours of homework to be successful. This 300-hour certificate is recognized by the Calgary Board of Education as a requirement for the position of Education Assistant, Braille. After successfully completing this course and achieving CNIB's minimum requirements, individuals may apply to the CNIB to complete the UEB Certification Test.
