This year’s faculty is made up of an outstanding group of coordinators, instructors and conductors. The faculty is passionate about their art and strive to motivate and share with their students the joy of achievement in making music. They come to the workshop from universities, colleges, professional ensembles, and private and public schools in Canada and the United States. They serve as motivators and role models for the instrumentalists by teaching artistry, discipline and appreciation of formal study.

Red Band Conductor - Dr. Angela Schroeder

A native of Calgary, Dr Angela Schroeder completed undergraduate studies in Music at University of Calgary, majoring in Secondary Education, with performance studies in piano and trumpet. She also completed the Diploma of Fine Arts in Wind Band Conducting at University of Calgary under the supervision of Glenn Price. After 3 years of teaching at various secondary schools in the Calgary area, Angela Schroeder entered the Master's program in Wind Band Conducting at Northwestern University, completing her studies there in 2004 with Mallory Thompson. She has recently completed her thesis requirements for the D.M.A. in Wind Band Conducting at the University of North Texas, under the supervision of Eugene Corporon.

Dr Schroeder is currently Assistant Professor of Music in the Department of Music of the University of Alberta. She is the Director of Bands, the area coordinator for the Winds and Percussion, and conducts the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and the Orchestral Winds and Percussion. She teaches courses in conducting and wind band education, and works with Graduate students in Wind Band conducting. She previously taught conducting at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.

Angela Schroeder is well known in the Alberta music education community, not only through her teaching and conducting both in schools and in community music organizations, but through her involvement as an executive director of the Alberta Band Association for several years. Angela performs on cornet and trumpet with the Mill Creek Colliery Band and the Concordia University Orchestra, and has guest conducted and adjudicated numerous school bands in festivals and clinics throughout Western Canada. She is a contributor in three volumes of the Teaching Music through Performance in Band.

Blue Band Conductor - Mike Gardner

Mike GardnerMike Gardner is the Director of Music at Central Memorial High. He holds a Bachelor of Music Performance degree from the University of North Texas and a Master of Music Education from the University of Missouri. Mr. Gardner has taught music in the public school system for 25 years. At Central Memorial, Mr. Gardner teaches and conducts the Symphonic Band, directs two Jazz Ensembles, teaches advanced vocal and instrumental musicianship classes. He has also teaches theory, ear training, and applied saxophone at Mount Royal University and is a director of the Westwinds Music Society.

In addition to Mr. Gardner’s teaching and conducting qualifications, he also performs as a saxophonist and arranges music for bands and choirs. He has performed with a variety of jazz musicians and groups such as the Prime Time Big Band, the Eric Friedenberg Orchestra, the Harry James Tribute Orchestra, The Tommy Dorsey Memorial Orchestra, and The Guy Lombardo Memorial Orchestra. He has also been a sideman for Lou Rawls, Johnny Mathis, Rosemary Clooney, Rob McConnell, Tommy Banks, and others.

Green Band Conductor - Scott Campbell

Scott Campbell Scott Campbell is the Band Director at MidSun School in South Calgary, a program consisting of approximately 260 students in grades 7 through 9. In recent years, his jazz and concert bands have been awarded numerous awards, including the Floyd Williamson Trophy for Most Outstanding Junior High Concert Band at the 2010 Alberta International Band Festival- Calgary. He is currently the Director of the Sherwood-Like-To-Play Community Band, which rehearses on Wednesday nights at MidSun. He has been a clinician with the Vic Lewis Festival in Canmore and the Calgary Regional Summer Band Workshop for several years. Mr. Campbell has been a member of the Canadian Forces Army Reserves since 1997, performing with bands in Edmonton, Ottawa and Calgary. Mr. Campbell holds a Bachelor of Music in Saxophone Performance from the University of Alberta and Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary. When he’s not working, he loves spending time with wife, Elisabeth, and two sons, Evan and Nolan.

Beginning Band Conductor: Lisa Martens

Lisa Martens completed her Bachelor of Music degree in 2006 and her Bachelor of Education degree in 2008, both at the University of Calgary. She began her love for a wide variety of music genres at an early age, studying French horn at age 12, the guitar at age 13, and the bass guitar at age 14.

Ms. Martens has been the music director at Georges. P. Vanier School in Calgary for the past four years; which has included directing both the instrumental band and guitar programs. In addition, Ms. Marten enjoys working with young students and is looking forward to making her debut as the new Beginning Band conductor at the Calgary Regional Summer Band Workshop this summer.
