Gordon KempthorneGordon Kempthorne

Gordon developed his interest in jewelry early in his life, working in a jewelry store in North Battleford, Sask., under the mentorship of a jeweler who taught him the tricks of the trade in jewelry/watch repair. After moving to Calgary in the late sixties, Gordon’s career took a turn to the steel industry and he became a journeyman machinist and enjoyed many years in that industry until his retirement in 2008. Over these years, he always held an interest in jewelry and decided to make it an active hobby. In 1997, while looking for lapidary equipment, he came across a silversmithing course recommended by a supplier and offered by Continuing Education, Calgary Board of Education, which was the first of many courses taken. Gordon has also enjoyed courses at the Alberta College of Art and is always looking for new ideas and techniques.

In 2001, Gordon began assisting with the silversmithing classes offered by Chinook Learning Services and has continued each year to enjoy sharing his knowledge and experience with students while also learning from them. He enjoys the camaraderie and friendships developed over the years while attending classes. Gordon has built up quite a collection of fashion jewelry and is often commissioned to design pieces for friends, family and acquaintances.

Now that Gordon has retired, he has much more time to enjoy his hobby, family, golf and testing new recipes in the kitchen.
