The Calgary Board of Education provides adult and continuing education through Chinook Learning Services. Chinook connects with the community on a daily basis, offering High School Upgrading, non-credit Continuing Education, adult English as a Second Language (ESL) programming and International Programs.
Chinook is the largest High School Upgrading centre in Alberta, serving almost 9,000 part-time students annually, including about 3,350 in Summer School. Students come to Chinook to complete, upgrade or enhance their high school diploma as they prepare to enter post-secondary institutions or the world of work. Chinook offers morning, afternoon and evening classes, multiple intakes, and specialized programs to allow students great flexibility in achieving their goals.
New Canadians come to Chinook annually to learn to speak English as a Second Language, or to review skills needed to meet employment, personal and education goals. Annually, about 700 students benefit from the programs, which are funded by Alberta Employment and Immigration or Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
About 12,000 Calgarians of all ages enjoy Chinook’s non-credit Continuing Education programs annually. They choose from classes across the city in the areas of art & music, computer training, cooking, do-it-yourself, finance, health and wellness, languages, law, passions & pastimes, workplace training and writing. Increasingly, specialized corporate training has become very popular. A wide variety of academic success, personal wellbeing and fun courses are offered for Child, Youth and Family.
Students can earn high school credits for on-the-job experience with Off-Campus programs. Teachers supervise work experience students while they learn employability skills. Employers become valued partners in the educational process.
Chinook offers International School Programs for student groups & we welcome individual international students, who are over 18 years of age, to study our ESL or High School Upgrading programs.
