About Us

Chinook Learning Services is the Calgary Board of Education’s provider of adult High School Upgrading, ESL and non-credit Continuing Education. Summer School is offered to Grades 1-12. High school students can gain work experience through our Off-Campus programs. Chinook offers International school programs to student groups and we welcome individual international students who are over 18 years of age to our Adult ESL and High School Upgrading programs.

High School Upgrading

Chinook is the largest High School Upgrading centre in Alberta, serving almost 9,000 part-time students annually. Students come to Chinook to complete, upgrade or enhance their high school diploma as they prepare to enter post-secondary institutions or the world of work. Chinook offers morning, afternoon and evening classes, multiple intakes, and specialized programs to allow students great flexibility in achieving their goals. Diploma Exam Preparation courses are offered to support students as they study for their examinations.

Adult ESL & LINC

Chinook is one of Calgary’s major providers of English as a Second Language and LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada), providing a key stepping stone to success for new Calgarians. The programs are provincially or federally funded, depending on their scope. Adult learners increase their English proficiency in order to re-enter the workplace in their chosen field or to qualify to attend post-secondary institutions.

Continuing Education

Chinook is the oldest provider of Continuing Education in the city. Programming for adults is provided at a variety of CBE sites. Professional development courses are offered in the areas of computer and workplace training. Personal development courses are offered in the areas of art, music, cooking, do-it-yourself, finance, health & wellness, languages, law, and passions & pastimes. Customized Corporate Training is also available.

Summer School – Grades 10-12

High School Summer School is offered in July at multiple school locations. Students take courses in order to upgrade or to provide flexibility in their high school programs. Classes are held in the mornings or afternoons during weekdays in July. Diploma Examinations are written in the first week of August.

Summer School - Grades 1-9

Chinook offers Summer School to Grades 1-9 students. Learning support is provided through Remedial, Study Skills and ELL classes during the last three weeks in July.

Off-Campus Programs

Students can earn high school credits for on-the-job experience with Off-Campus programs. Teachers supervise work experience students while they learn employability skills. Employers become valued partners in the educational process.

International

Chinook offers International School Programs for student groups and welcomes individual international students who are over 18 years of age to study in the ESL or High School Upgrading programs.
