
Career and Life Management
Overview
- Alberta Education requires all students to earn 3 credits in CALM to receive a high school diploma
- Adheres to the mandated Alberta Education Program of Studies
- Prerequisite: none
- 3 credit course
Basic Aims
- Career and Life Management will provide all students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to physical, mental and social well-being, and enable them to respond positively to the opportunities and expectations in the rapidly changing world of today.
Learner Outcomes
The student will:
- Develop a more positive self-concept and an understanding of personal interests, values, aptitudes and abilities
- Promote independent personal management by developing the ability to make choices and accept challenges that take into account significant others, values, responsibilities and resources
- Develop an awareness of health as a resource for everyday living: that health maintenance contributes to achieving control over and improvement of realizing goals and satisfying needs, and to coping with changes in the environment
- Develop knowledge about career options and determines personal career strategies
- Develop an awareness of the relationship between and among personal economics, lifestyle and occupational planning
- Develop the ability to deal with feelings, and to apply effective thinking and communication skills in order to function well in society
Course Topics
Topics that are covered are:
- Module 1: Personal Choices
- Module 2: Career and Life Choices
- Module 3: Resource Choices
Evaluation
- Assessment will be ongoing with many formative tasks designed to help you direct your learning. Marks will be awarded based on a variety of summative assessments.
- Class mark: based on tests and class work (e.g. assignments, projects, etc.)
To earn credits, students must successfully complete all three modules
Class Expectations
- Work consistently on the course and attend classes
- Develop a personal learning plan (including a study schedule) and be prepared to revise this plan as needed
- Be familiar with the course outcomes and requirements
- Participate in formative assessment tasks designed to help you discover your learning needs in relation to course outcomes
- Use all resources available (teacher, classmates, textbook, Brightspace by D2L, etc.) to address your learning needs
- Advocate for yourself; if needed seek help to review and adjust your personal learning plan to ensure success in the course
