Overview

  • For students planning to attend university or another post-secondary institution
  • Diploma level course for Alberta High School students
  • Adheres to the mandated Alberta Education Program of Studies
  • Prerequisite: minimum 50% in Biology 20 (a strong work ethic and interest in life science topics and issues is recommended)
  • 5 credit course

Basic Aims

  • To develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to solve problems and make decisions about topics and issues related to Biology
  • To become a lifelong learner who maintains their sense of wonder about the world around them
  • To explore, analyze and appreciate the interrelationships among science, technology, society and the environment and to develop understandings that will affect the students’ personal lives, careers and futures

Learner Outcomes

  • Students will be encouraged to develop attitudes that support the responsible acquisition of application of scientific and technological knowledge to the mutual benefit of self, society and the environment - interest in Biology, mutual respect, scientific inquiry, collaboration, stewardship & safety
  • Students will construct knowledge and understandings of concepts in life science, and apply these understandings to interpret, integrate and extend their knowledge
  • Students will develop an understanding of the nature of science and technology, the relationships between science and technology and the social and environmental contexts of science and technology
  • Students will develop the skills required for scientific and technological inquiry, for solving problems, for communicating scientific ideas and results, for working collaboratively and for making informed decisions.

Course Description

Topics that are covered are:

  • Nervous and Endocrine System
  • Reproduction and Development
  • Cell Division, Genetics & Molecular Biology
  • Population and Community Dynamics

Evaluation

  • Assessment will be ongoing with many formative tasks designed to help you direct your learning. Marks will be awarded based on a variety of summative assessments.
  • Class mark: based on tests and class work (e.g. labs, quizzes, assignments, projects, etc.)
  • Alberta Education Diploma Exams provides up-to-date information related to Diploma Exams and final mark calculation

Class Expectations

  • Work consistently on the course and attend classes
  • Develop a personal learning plan (including a study schedule) and be prepared to revise this plan as needed
  • Be familiar with the course outcomes and requirements
  • Participate in formative assessment tasks designed to help you discover your learning needs in relation to course outcomes
  • Use all resources available (teacher, classmates, textbook, Brightspace by D2L, etc.) to address your learning needs
  • Advocate for yourself; if needed seek help to review and adjust your personal learning plan to ensure success in the course
