Course Description

Develop an understanding of retention and disposition theory and practice. Focus on the protection of critical business information through the application of retention and disposition programs, developing retention schedules, acquisition and appraisal of records, arrangement and description, reference services, preventive conservation, and facility planning and security.

Participant Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Define retention and disposition principles

  • Define the requirements of a retention schedule

  • Use the records inventory to begin the retention schedule

  • Understand operational requirements

  • Understand archival requirements

  • Understand legal requirements and how to locate them

  • Understand the Alberta Evidence Act

  • Interpret the Limitations Act

  • Understand the role that media plays in disposition

  • Describe the different types of disposition

  • Understand how to implement a retention schedule

Course Content

Session I

  • Review records management theory
  • Define retention and disposition principles
  • Define the requirements of a retention schedule
  • Use the records Inventory to begin the retention schedule

Session II
