This year’s faculty is made up of an outstanding group of coordinators, instructors
and conductors. The faculty is passionate about their art and strives to motivate and
share with their students the joy of achievement in making music. They come to the
workshop from universities, colleges, professional ensembles, private and public
schools in Canada and the United States. They serve as motivators and role models for
the instrumentalists by teaching artistry, discipline and appreciation of formal study.

Blue Band Conductor - Mr Brendan Hagan
Brendan Hagan holds a Bachelor of Music degree with Distinction specializing in
secondary music education and a Bachelor of Education degree from the Master of
Teaching Program from the University of Calgary. Brendan is currently a band and
choral director at Western Canada High School where he enjoys working with music
students in one of the premier high school music programs in the city of Calgary.
In 2007 Brendan was nominated for the Edwin Parr Award for outstanding teaching
performance by a first year teacher within the Calgary Board of Education.
Brendan also holds a position as a member of the Alberta International Band Festival
Committee. Brendan is actively involved with community ensembles and is currently
serving as the Woodwind Coordinator for the Calgary Stampede Showband. Brendan
Hagan has performed as a conductor in many locations across the world including:
Kerkrade, Holland; London, England; Paris, France; Portland Oregon; Pasadena,
California; Chicago, Illinois; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. Brendan has received numerous
opportunities as a guest conductor and educator on many different occasions and
very much enjoys the experience.
Green Band Conductor - Mr. Jeff Hiley
Jeff Hiley is currently the Director of Music at A.E. Cross Jr. High in Calgary. He holds a
Bachelor of Music degree specializing in Jazz Studies and Secondary Education from
the University of Calgary in conjunction with Jacksonville State University (Alabama)
and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Calgary.
As an educator and saxophonist Jeff is an active performer and clinician with more
than100 local and international performances every year. As a recording artist Jeff
has appeared on many albums with international exposure. Most recently Jeff
participated in the Montreal Jazz Festival for a second time with the Afro-Cuban
group Masacote, and went on a 12 country tour of Europe with the Dino Martinis, one
of Calgary's most popular jump blues bands. Jeff has also enjoyed being a staff
member of the WestWinds Music Society, Calgary Stampede Show Band, Calgary
Board of Education’s Chinook Learning Services and Central Memorial High School
Music Department as well as a guest director with numerous Calgary community
music organizations. Jeff is very proud to be the recipient of the 2004-05 Keith Mann
"Young Band Directors" Award from the Alberta Band Association for his dedication
and commitment to music education.
White Band Conductor - Ms. Wendy J. Freeman
Wendy Freeman received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Calgary and a
Bachelor of Education from the University of Windsor. She has completed an Honour
Specialist in Music at Queen’s University and most recently completed a Master of
Music, specializing in Conducting Performance at the University of Calgary.
Wendy is the pit orchestra director of the University of Calgary Operetta Company
and is a sessional instructor. She is the assistant conductor of the Alberta Winds,
Calgary’s premiere adult wind ensemble, and is the current President of their
Executive Players’ Board. Her graduate conducting research using motion capture
technology was most recently acknowledged by Eye on Ideas magazine. This fall will
mark Wendy’s sixth year teaching high school music. Currently she co-conducts the
Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Pit Orchestra at Central
Memorial Performing Visual Arts High School.
Red Band Conductor - Dr. Fraser Linklater
Fraser Linklater is presently an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Music at the University
of Manitoba. He directs the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band and Chamber Winds and
teaches courses in music education and conducting. A native of Winnipeg, Dr. Linklater
holds a Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of North Texas and a Ph.D.
in Music Education from the University of Michigan.
A trumpet player, Dr. Linklater has performed with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the
Orchestre Symphonique de Genève (Switzerland), and the Ron Paley Big Band, as well as
being a founding member of the Winnipeg Brass Quintet. A co-director of the Canadian
Wind Conductors Development Program, Dr. Linklater is also Vice-President of the
Manitoba Band Association and coordinates all three levels of honour bands for the MBA.
In October 2002, he received the MBA Award of Distinction for his services to music
education in Manitoba. Dr. Linklater has guest conducted and adjudicated at various
festivals and music camps across Canada as well as the United States.
