Answers To Common ESL Questions

1. How do I apply for full-time funding from the Alberta Government for ESL classes?

The first step is to call 403-777-6330 to make an appointment for a placement test. After the placement test, we will tell you if we have a course at your level. If we do, we will help you apply for full-time funding. If you are approved, you will study 20 hours a week. The government will pay the cost of tuition and books and you may be eligible for a living allowance.

2. What are the requirements for funding from the Alberta Government?

You must have lived in Alberta for a minimum of 3 months. You are required to complete Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) or be at an ESL level higher than LINC 4. An advisor will tell you about the requirements regarding your financial situation to be eligible for funding.

3. How long does the process of applying for funding from the Alberta Government take?

Funding applications may take up to 12 weeks to process. Be sure to apply early.

4. How do international students apply for ESL classes?

Chinook's International Program welcomes students who are over 18 years of age to study English as a Second Language or High School Upgrading programs.

Please download our Application Form for International Students (PDF). Fill it in, and fax it to 403-777-7564 or mail it to Tuxedo Park Campus, 130 – 28 Avenue NE., Calgary, AB, T2E 2A8. When we receive the application form and the payment for the first term, we will send you a letter of acceptance. Send this letter to Canada Immigration to obtain a study permit.
