Ellen SearsEllen Sears

Ellen worked for the Calgary Board of Education for 25 years as a teacher-librarian and area school library consultant. She retired in 2006 after working in elementary, junior high, and senior high schools. During her retirement, she has set up several school libraries, organizing and enhancing their collections. Ellen has also worked for the Calgary Catholic School Board for five years as school librarian in their Teachers’ Resource Centre. She has been a member of the Alberta School Library Association and for a year was editor of their journal, The Teacher-LibrarianToday.

For over 36 years Ellen has been big supporter of the Kaleidoscope Conference, which is a literary conference that occurs in Calgary every four years, featuring authors and illustrators of children’s literature.
Ellen has a passion for reading which stems from early childhood. She says:

“I enjoy the interactions with my students about literature, learning, and inquiry. Sharing ideas about great books and stories has been my reward when participating with other library staff and students in this field. The interchange during discussions is enriching and inspiring. Seeing someone understand and master reading skills, ideas, our human condition, and get excited about books and reading is awesome. As well, the introduction of literature in audio-tech format and graphic novels keeps getting more interesting all the time. Learning how to evaluate and present this material in order to interest students is the challenge we all face as leaders of learning and teaching. I hope we can infuse others with enthusiasm for reading current and historical books of merit in print or electronically.”
