Chinook Learning Services is the Calgary Board of Education's provider of High School Upgrading, Adult English Language Learning, non-credit Continuing Education (professional development, personal development & corporate training), Summer School for Grades 10-12, Off-Campus Programs (work experience) and Summer Band Programs.
High School Upgrading
Chinook is the largest High School Upgrading centre in Alberta, serving almost 10,000 part-time students annually. Students come to Chinook to complete, upgrade or enhance their high school diplomas as they prepare to enter post-secondary institutions or the world of work. Chinook offers morning, afternoon and evening classes, multiple intakes, and specialized programs to allow students great flexibility in achieving their goals. Diploma Exam Preparation courses are offered to support students as they study for their examinations.
Adult English Language Learning - Adult ESL & LINC
Chinook is one of Calgary’s major providers of English as a Second Language and LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada), providing a key stepping stone to success for new Calgarians. The programs are provincially or federally funded, depending on their scope. Adults learn or review English language skills needed to meet personal, educational, and employment goals.
Chinook is the oldest provider of Continuing Education in the city. Programming for adults is provided at a variety of CBE sites. Professional Development courses are offered in the following areas: computer training, finance, forklift training, interpersonal skills, professional engineering preparation, school-based training and writing & workplace skills. Personal Development courses are offered in the following areas: art & music, languages, life planning, and passions & pastimes. Chinook has a wide selection of Online Learning courses. Customized Corporate Training is also available.
Summer School – Grades 10-12
High School Summer School is offered to 4500 students in July at multiple school locations. Students take courses in order to upgrade or to provide flexibility in their high school programs. Classes are held in the mornings during weekdays in July. Diploma Examinations are written in the first week of August.
Students can earn high school credits for on-the-job experience with Off-Campus programs. Teachers supervise work experience students while they learn employability skills. Employers become valued partners in the educational process.
Summer Band Programs
Calgary Regional Summer Band Programs are fun-filled and designed to challenge students from Grade 5 to adult.
